House ventilation cleaning
If your house has heat recovery ventilation, the unit runs around the clock and all the air in the house passes through it. Clean filters, heat exchanger and ducts help it deliver the intended airflow without wasting electricity.
House ventilation
Why house ventilation needs attention
Newer houses usually have heat recovery ventilation. The unit extracts humid, stale air from the kitchen, bathroom and toilet and supplies filtered fresh air to the bedrooms and living room. The heat exchanger passes the warmth of the outgoing air to the incoming air.
Over time, dust builds up in the filters, the heat exchanger, on the fans and in the ducts. The unit has to work harder: less air may get through and more electricity may be used. Clogged filters and a dirty heat exchanger are one of the most common reasons a unit gets noisy.
The ducts usually run through the attic, between floors or behind suspended ceilings, so it’s important to have access to both the unit and the ducts.

Maintenance
How often to service house ventilation
Exact intervals are in your unit’s manual. As a general rule of thumb:
- Filters — replace at least twice a year, more often in dusty locations.
- Ventilation unit — have it inspected and cleaned once a year.
- Ducts — usually clean every 5–10 years, or when you notice dust and weak airflow.
- Outdoor air grille — check it in autumn and spring so leaves, snow or insect mesh don’t block it.
